New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to hold bilateral talks with his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau in New Delhi on Friday, a day after the controversy over a dinner invitation to convicted Khalistani terrorist Jaspal Atwal by the Canadian High Commissioner to India blew up. Trudeau reached Rashtrapati Bhawan on Friday morning and was received by PM Modi and other ministers. Both the countries have indicated that they are looking at a fresh start to India-Canada ties.Here are the latest updates developments from the Modi-Trudeau meeting today:

9.00 am IST Canada supports ‘strong and united’ India: Foreign minister Chrystia FreelandCanadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland on Thursday said that Canada “supports a strong and united India”, but made it clear that it is very, very proud of her country’s diverse society, which includes the Sikh community. Freeland said Canada is mindful “of the menace of terrorism and the scars and deaths that India has endured”, which she described as “mind-boggling”. Her remarks came amid criticism faced by her Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his perceived pro-Khalistan approach. Freeland said the issue was discussed during her meeting with External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj today. “I did discuss the issue with the (Indian) foreign minister and I will leave it to her to comment on her impressions of the conversation. But I felt it was a very constructive and useful discussion we had,” Freeland said.

Atwal told Canada’s Postmedia that he did not plan to attend the dinner as he was in Mumbai on business, The Vancouver Sun reported. He blamed “enemies” for circulating the photos obtained by Postmedia and stressed that he travelled to India on his own on 11 February and is not part of any official government delegation. Atwal said in a series of text messages yesterday that he was in India for Media Waves, a Surrey online radio station. PTI
