Excessive stress in the campaign ahead of the just concluded Assembly election in Tripura has caused a deterioration in the health condition of a number of candidates. One aspirant died of cardiac arrest. A few were admitted to hospitals and some others were discharged with a strict health advisory.
Ruling CPI(M) candidate, Ramendra Narayan Debbarma, died in the midst of the campaign and another candidate Biswajit Datta pulled out on health grounds.
Mr. Debbarma, 68, died on the eve of the elections that were held on February 18. Election in Charilam (ST) constituency was countermanded. A by-election is slated for March 12.
Official CPI(M) candidate of Khowai constituency Biswajit Datta had to be replaced with Nirmal Biswas after the former fell critically ill. Mr. Biswas barely managed to submit his papers on the final date for filing nominations and he had just about two weeks to campaign.
Fisheries Minister Khagendra Jamatia too had to be hospitalised. CPI(M) candidate from Krishnapur constituency was referred to the AIIMS in New Delhi after his health took a turn for the worse.
CPI(M) women front leade , Rita Kar Majumder, has been admitted here for kidney related ailment.
