Mapusa: A traffic police constable was injured while discharing his duty after he was hit by a car at his stationed point in Mapusa.
Mapusa police said that the incident occured at around 9.15am on Friday when traffic police constable Vinayak Talaunekar was supervising the zebra crossing opposite KTC bus stand entrance.
Talaunekar was regulating the vehicular movement proceeding from Gandhi circle towards Maruti temple for the safety of pedestrians crossing the road.
Sources said that while on duty, a speeding car dashed against him. Due to the impact, the constable crashed onto the car’s windscreen and sustained head injuries. He was immediately rushed to North Goa district hospital and then referred to Goa medical college and hospital for further treatment.
Police conducted the panchanama and registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the car driver, Estevio Fernandes, a resident of Sodiem-Siolim, under sections 279 and 337 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police are investigating the case.
Sources said that in January 2016, Mapusa municipal council had proposed installing traffic signals at various locations in Mapusa, including the zebra crossing opposite KTC bus stand entrance, but the plan never materialised.
