
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau inked six MoUs, including one on energy cooperation, on Friday, after holding bilateral talks on a wide range of topics. Their talks a range of issues including terrorism and extremism, as well as ways to strengthen ties in trade, education and defence. Delivering a joint statement, PM Modi said it was important for the two countries to work together to fight the menace of terrorism and extremism.
PM Modi also said the two countries share similar views on the proliferation of North Korea, safety and peace in the Indo-Pacific region and independence of democratic institutions in Maldives. Trudeau, thanking PM Modi for his hospitality, said the two countries shared similar democratic and cultural principles.
Trudeau was given a ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhavan this morning, where he was received by President Ram Nath Kovind, PM Modi and members of the Union Cabinet. He later paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. He also held talks with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Taking to Twitter, PM Modi said: The talks with PM @JustinTrudeau were fruitful. Our discussions focussed on closer India-Canada cooperation in various sectors including investment, trade, energy and stronger people-to-people relations.
Prime Minister Trudeau says India is a natural partner and a trusted friend. "Modi and I welcome cooperation in several sectors," he said. He adds that India is the second largest source of students in Canadian universities. He said the two countries are similar in terms of democratic and cultural practices as well. He ends by thanking the PM Modi for his hospitality.
Modi says, "Prime Minister Trudeau and I exchanged our view on global issues. We discussed in detail the situation of Afghanistan. It is evident and true that the government and the people of Afghanistan need support in tackling the menace of terrorism and in establishing a peaceful atmosphere in the country."
He adds, "We share common views on the proliferation of North Korea, safety and peace in Indo-Pacific region and independence of democratic institutions in Maldives."
PM Modi says an MoU on higher education has been renewed between India and Canada. This will benefit the students of both nations; and those travelling to and from India, he adds.
Modi continues, "India has attached a high importance to pursuing its strategic partnership with Canada. Our ties are based on democracy, pluralism, the supremeity of law and the mutual interaction." Modi says the two countries have agreed to strengthen ties in the area of security, terrorism and extremism.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the press following bilateral talks with his Canadian counterpart, tells Trudeau he is happy he has visited the country along with his family. He added that he is also happy that Trudeau was able to visit several cities across the country.
The two Prime Ministers signed several key MoUs during their bilateral talks today. The two will deliver a press conference shortly.
EAM spokesperson Raveesh Kumar says Modi and his Canadian counterpart held discussions on strengthening cooperation in trade and investment, energy, education, healthcare, IT, start up, science and technology, defence and security, tourism and people-to-people contacts.

As Modi met Canada's first family, the Prime Minister had expressed earlier, "I hope PM @JustinTrudeau and his family had a very enjoyable stay so far. I particularly look forward to meeting his children Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien."

Trudeau, Swaraj hold talks Justin Trudeau and Sushma Swaraj are holding bilateral talks. Their meeting comes a day after Swaraj met a Canadian delegation, including the Canadian Foreign Minister. They held discussions on a wide range of topics including strengthening relations in trade and investment, security and cybersecurity, energy, people to people contacts and other relevant bilateral and regional issues.
Trudeau and his family visited Rajghat, and paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi. Trudeau later met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. The two will hold talks on ways to strengthen ties and deepen partnership between India and Canada.

Trudeau's visit to India has been mired in controversy. The latest issues to dampen the mood? Canada-based Khalistani activist, convicted in the attempted murder of a Punjab Minister in 1986, was invited to two events organised for Trudeau, in Mumbai and Delhi. After it kicked up a row, the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi said it had rescinded the invitation last night. Meanwhile, a Canadian journalist who protested PM Modi's visit to Canada in 2015, is also part of Trudeau's delegation to India.
