Arctic Circle welcomes debut energy-positive Northern Lights hotel

northern lightsThe Svart hotel is based at the foot of the Svartisen glacier close to the Almlifjellet mountain and has a unique shape emulating an extra-terrestrial cruiser.
Its spectacular design was inspired by the ‘fiskehjell’ that is an A-shaped wooden structure utilized by fishermen in Norway to dry fish. The stilts are leveraged as a tribute to ‘rorbuer’ that are fishermen’s huts extended on poles.
Svart represents another top locale for admiring Aurora Borealis but then it joins the planet-conscious set as a crucial energy-positive ‘powerhouse’.
Powerhouses (or plus houses) are designed to produce more energy than they actually consume and utilize renewable sources like sun, water and wind to power their properties.
With an aim to meet this tough criteria the hotel would have to be created so as to leave minimum impact on the environment. This would enable the rare plant species of the area and the blue ice of the Svartisen glacier to remain protected.
This would actually be the very first hotel of this sort to be constructed above the Arctic Circle and would utilize 85% less energy as compared to normal hotels.
Anything additional would power amenities like mobile phones and hairdryers.
Geothermal wells would be harnessing energy from the ground below to offer heating and solar panels would be placed on the roof. The circular design of the property and large windows would not only permit guests to enjoy 360-degree views of the mountains, glaciers and fjords.
But it would also optimize sunlight to the terraces, restaurants and rooms throughout the seasons.
