NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that it had sent Nirav Modi an intimation about the revocation of his passport to an email id provided by the billionaire himself.

The notice was also sent to a physical address in India.

The MEA added that though there had been some confusion about the mailing address, the diamantaire had acknowledged the receipt of the intimation.

"Now we are waiting for him to respond to the notice served to him," ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.

Kumar also clarified that the MEA was not involved in locating offenders - investigative agencies were.

"There are certain legal processes which needs to be completed in time. Following advice by the agencies we did suspend the passports of Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi. They are supposed to reply within a stipulated time. If they don't, we will take further action," Kumar said.

The MEA had on February 16 suspended the validity of the passports of Nirav Modi and his uncle Choksi.

The duo are among the prime-accused in the Rs 11,300-crore Punjab National Bank fraud case.

They have been given a week to present their side against the revocation of their passports.

"If they fail to respond within the stipulated time it will be assumed that they have no response to offer and the MEA will go ahead with the revocation," the ministry had said.
