Montreal Canadiens defenseman Shea Weber needs surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left foot and will miss the remainder of the season, the team announced Thursday.

Weber has missed Montreal's past 26 games (33 games total) as a result of the injury.

"Following the diagnosis of Shea Weber's injury, it was our belief that after a comprehensive rehabilitation protocol under the guidance of our medical team, Shea would be able to return to play this season," team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Paul Martineau said in a statement. "Unfortunately, after extensive efforts to heal Shea's injury, progress has not been made as expected.

"Our medical group will work with Shea to ensure he is pursuing the best course of treatment moving forward, and we expect him to make a full recovery and be ready for the start of training camp next season. The length of his recovery will be determined following surgery, which will be performed by Dr. Anderson."

Weber finishes the season with six goals and 10 assists, his lowest scoring output since registering 10 points in 28 games as a rookie for the Nashville Predators in 2005-06.

The Canadiens acquired Weber from the Preds for fellow defenseman P.K. Subban in 2016. The 32-year-old has eight years remaining on his current contract and will earn $6 million in base salary annually starting next season and ending in 2021-22.
