A 45-year-old construction worker died after hollow bricks and mud collapsed on her at a construction site in T. Nagar on Wednesday. Seven other workers were injured in the incident.
According to police, an apartment complex is being constructed on Gopalakrishnan Street, T. Nagar. Work was on for the past 20 days and the basement for the building had been completed. On Wednesday, Thangaraj, mason, brought 10 construction workers, including seven women, from M.G.R. Nagar for work. “Around 9 a.m., the labourers were working near a 10-foot-high and 40-foot-wide compound wall. All of a sudden the mud and the hollow bricks kept by the side of the wall collapsed,” said a senior police officer.
Trapped under mud
Alagammal, 45, a relative of the mason, who was trapped under the mud and bricks, was rescued and rushed to a private hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Seven others who tried to escape, sustained injuries.
A case was registered at the Pondy Bazaar police station. Supervisor Prabhu was arrested under Section 304 A of the IPC (causing death due to negligence). The others who were injured include, Uma, Rani, Rani, Valli, Mala, Senthil and Kasi.
