Unlike previous Army chiefs, he has spoken often in public on matters related to security and politics. Twitter exploded with reactions after Gen. Rawat made the statement:

Owaisi saying Who is Bipin Rawat to comment about the growth of the AIUDF in Assam? Wow, He can link Religion into Army but Army Chief cannot talk over National Security. Owaisi was in Coma when in 2016, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal told Muslims to unite against Hindus in Assam.
