Introducing Dr Love, Who Solves Your Relationship Riddles In A Confusing Digital Age

Dr. Love

Dr. LoveHow can I convince my neighbour to go out with me? We have known each other since childhood, so she doesn't even look at me with much interest.
All you can do is ask her out for a cup of coffee. If she's not interested, there's not much you can do. She needs to get to know you better, so work on that. Being around someone is not the same as knowing who they really are.

My girlfriend thinks it's perfectly okay for us to not chat for weeks at a time, because she believes we have more important things to do. She ignores my calls when she's at work, doesn't respond to messages for days at a stretch, and acts like I'm the one being dramatic whenever I complain about this. The funny thing is that her behaviour has now started to make me feel like a nag whenever we go out. It makes me hesitant to even bring up this topic, because she will only sigh and make me sound like I'm being over-dramatic. I'm actually starting to doubt myself and wonder if I really am being too harsh on her. Am I?
You're not being over-dramatic, but it's obvious that there is a difference between how each of you looks at this relationship. The question of doubting yourself shouldn't arise if you both manage to tell each other what you want from being together. Is it companionship? Support? Empathy? These are important things to talk about, because they help you both come to terms with what you have and what this may evolve into. Your girlfriend isn't to blame if she is happy with the amount of time she spends with you. Things could easily have been the other way round. If you feel as if you aren't being treated with respect when she doesn't bother returning your calls, you owe it to yourself to ask for an explanation. If she doesn't give you one, it means she doesn't respect you enough to do that.
