Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog Amitabh Kant today said if India is to grow, it must grow with jobs and there is no better sector in India to provide jobs than export industry.
He said the government should be fully behind this sector as it is a key contributor to India’s employment in the export sector.
Delivering the foundation day lecture at Apparel Export Promotion Council at Gurugram today, he said textiles and apparels have made up about 16 per cent of India’s goods export.
Mr Kant said the industry has exported textiles worth 40 billion in 2015-16 as compared to China‘s export worth 175 billion.
He said, there is huge potential in country’s textile sector because industry in China is getting expensive and moving out of apparel sector.
This vacuum is to be filled by India in years to come as it collectively exports to over 150 countries.
Mr. Kant said, there has been a reduction in the benefits of the industry post GST roll out and the government is looking at ways through which it could bring it at par with the rates prevalent in the previous regime.
For the benefit of the industry, central and state levies should be refunded and Government will work with the industry to resolve this issue.
He said, the industry has a very high share of female employment which is a matter of real proud for the country.
