Senior CPI(M) leader V.S. Achuthanandan has called for defeating the planned moves of people with vested interests against the party.

Speaking after hoisting the party flag ahead of the delegate session of the 22nd CPI(M) State conference at V.V. Dhakshinamurthy Nagar (Regional Theatre) here on Thursday, Mr. Achuthanandan said the meet was being conducted at a time when the country was facing unprecedented socio-political challenges.

“Communal fascist forces are posing a great threat to the country. The Left front should be strengthened to protect the country from fascist forces,” he said.

Inaugurating the delegate session, general secretary Sitaram Yechury said the vibrant inner party democracy was the strength of the CPI(M). “Kerala has an important role in the history of the communist movement. It has played a vital role in contributing to people’s struggles against forces attacking the unity of the country and welfare of the people,” he said.

The meet had an added importance in a situation when the secular fabric of the country was at risk, he said. “Unity of Left parties and all democratic forces is necessary to face the challenges posed by the RSS/BJP forces. Neoliberal policies, which have been implemented with great aggression, have been exploiting the common man,” he said.

In all, 566 delegates are participating in the session.

The first volume of History of Communist Party was released at the inaugural meeting. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan handed over the first copy to Polit Bureau member S. Ramachandran Pillai. A seminar on ‘Culture and ideology’ was held.
