The new party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, was not started to merely exist for the next four decades, but to bring about a change in the society, said Kamal Haasan.

Madurai:

It was for his supporters to drive the party for at least three or four generations to see the change that he desired, added Kamal addressing a public meeting after the launch of the party in Madurai.
Soon after the formal launch of the party, Kamal Haasan announced a high-level committee comprising mainly of people close to him and whom he trusted. Thangavelu, who is heading the Kamal Narpani Manram for close to 40 years, actress Sripriya, noted actor Nazar’s wife Kameela, retired police officer AG Maurya, and businessman CK Kumaravel were among the prominent members in the committee.
He also inducted his team members from the popular TV reality show ‘Big Boss’ – lyricist Snehan, actor Barani and comedian Vaiyapuri – in the committee. Besides this body, Kamal also announced the district heads of the nascent party, and commended many who had contributed towards the launch of the party.
Throughout his speech, Kamal stressed the importance of his supporters and asked them to be the change that they desired. Speaking about eradication of corruption he said, “Maintain yourself clean. Then the entire world will witness the change. For that change, you need to do minor sacrifices.”
While speaking about leadership, he made it clear that he was not a leader but only one among them. As Tamilians, the supporters should not bow down to anyone; they were leaders themselves, said Kamal. On another instance, he said the fans were his children, noting how they had entered politics with the dream of change. He asked them to speak and write in Tamil to save the language, and exhorted them to give their children primary education in Tamil.
He assured that the party would not be in the hand of any particular person and none would head it for long. The party, Kamal stressed, belonged to his supporters.
Addressing the gathering, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged Kamal’s supporters to go for a change.
“Till yesterday people of Tamil Nadu were struck with only two options, DMK and AIADMK. But from today, the people have a new corruption-free alternative. Next time when you go to vote, you have a new alternative in the form of Kamal Haasan,” said Kejriwal, cheering the audience.
Kejriwal added that the people would be able to bring about a change in Tamil Nadu only if they wanted. If they don’t wish for such a change, they may continue voting for the corrupt parties, he added.
