A 54-year-old man in one-day police custody allegedly jumped from the second floor of Naraina police station on Tuesday evening, the police said in Wednesday.
Two suspended
He was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital. Two policemen have been suspended in connection with the incident.
The police said Dalbir Singh was arrested on Tuesday in a cheating case and produced in court, which remanded him to one-day police custody.
He was taken to Naraina police station, where he allegedly managed to give a slip to constable Parvesh on the second floor at 6.20 p.m.
The police searched for him and found him lying injured on the ground floor at the back of the police station. He was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Mr. Singh’s family has alleged that the policemen who arrested him demanded about ₹25,000 for his release.
“I was out making arrangements for the amount when someone from police station called saying my father had fallen from the police station building,” said Mr. Singh’s son Vijay.
The family has also claimed that they were informed about the incident only after Mr. Singh was declared dead.
Sub-Inspector Deepak and constable Parvesh have been suspended in connection with the incident.
Mr. Singh had gone to a dispensary at an Army hospital to procure medicines. However, his dependent Army identity card was found fake. He did not have a receipt from a doctor either. A search led to the discovery of four other dependent Army identity cards.
