SHILLONG: A festive air gripped the city as Congress president
Rahul Gandhi's cavalcade made its way through the roads of the hilly city, even as the road show threw traffic out of gear, clogging the city's narrow streets.
The road show began at the advanced landing ground in
Upper Shillong and culminated at
Police Bazaar. However, wearing his best smile, the Gandhi scion rode into the city in style, waving to the people from an open vehicle as he was received with shouts of 'Rahul, Rahul' and showered with marigold flowers.
Supporters had gathered in large numbers by the roadside, dancing and waving party flags while belting out the Congress's catchy election number in Khasi while traditional drum beats filled the air.
"He is so handsome," gasped one of the hundreds of charmed young ladies who lined up along the streets to catch a close glimpse of the dimpled Congress superstar, suavely dressed in white kurta pyjamas and a jet black Nehru jacket.
For a brief while, Rahul descended from his vehicle to interact with the crowd amid loud applause while people jostled to take pictures or selfies with him.
Rahul's road show culminated with a public rally at Police Bazar, the main commercial hub of the city, from where he addressed a gathering of hundreds of people.
Showering praises on matrilineal Meghalaya for holding high respect for women, Gandhi promised to come back to the state and stay for a longer duration once the election is over.
