Cop dies in hospital under mysterious circumstances

| | New Delhi

A Delhi Police Head Constable of the Third Battalion of Delhi Armed Police died under mysterious circumstances at a hospital in Kingways camp where he had taken an under trial prisoner for a medical checkup at Northwest Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar area on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior police officers of the Northwest district said that prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide. "We have sent his body for post mortem, likely to take place on Wednesday. Based on the autopsy reports, we will take further legal action."

Confirming the incident, Aslam Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) said, "On Tuesday, at around 3:30pm, we received an information about a gun shot injury to a policeman at the Rajan Babu TB hospital in Kingsway Camp. On reaching the spot, it has been learnt that one Head Constable Rajender of the Third Battalion of the Delhi Armed Police was on duty from 8am to 8pm. He had gone to the hospital along with one undertrial prisoner. The prisoner is a Tuberculosis patient who was admitted since February 8 for treatment. The Head Constable had sustained a gun shot injury in his temporal region. He was shifted to the Trauma Centre where he succumbed to injuries."

Ruling out any foul play, Khan said, "The under trial prisoner, identified as Manoj is a convict in a murder case of Tilak Nagar police station and is lodged at Tihar Jail. The prisoner had apparently no plans to escape."

Police said they have started investigation to establish what exactly were the sequence of events which led the Head Constable to sustain a gun shot injury. Police added that they will question the family and colleagues of the Head Constable Rajender to ascertain what led him to take such an extreme step.

Police said that they have sent the body of the deceased for post mortem. A team of forensic experts examined the spot where the Head Constable was found bleeding.
