HYDERABAD: Workers at the Gitanjali Group-promoted Hyderabad Gems Special Economic Zone today held a protest outside the jewellery manufacturing and export unit fearing the loss of jobs.

The unit is linked to Gitanjali Gems promoter Mehul Choksi, a co-accused in the Rs 11,384 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam.

Enforcement Directorate had raided the unit last week.

The workers under the aegis of the CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions) held a demonstration in front of the SEZ entrance gate demanding intervention of the government and provide them alternative employment amid "rumours" that the unit may be sealed.

Around 900 workers are working at the SEZ, located at Ravirala village in Maheshwaram mandal on the outskirts of the city.

TRS MLA T Krishna Reddy, former minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy and others met the protesting employees and expressed solidarity with them.

They assured them of taking up the matter with the Central and state governments.
