Wang returns as master of Qatar

Cape Town - Young Korean sensation Jeunghun Wang returns to the scene of the most recent of his three European Tour victories when the 22-year-old defends his Qatar Masters title at Doha Golf Club.

Wang was one of the breakthrough stars of the 2016 European Tour season, winning his first title in just his 13th appearance on the tour in Morocco before following that up with a second win in as many weeks in Mauritius.

"I'm so happy to be back in Qatar. I love playing this course so I'm very excited to get back out there and I think my game is ready to go too," said Wang.

"I played really well here last year obviously, as I won! I hope I can play similar to last year. I didn't expect those wins so early on the European Tour, even my first one in Morocco - I couldn't believe it and I still can't. I'm still trying to win every tournament so hopefully I play well this week."

The 2017 season, however, yielded the biggest victory of his burgeoning career as he overcame Swede Joakim Lagergren and South Africa's Jaco Van Zyl in a play-off to break into the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking and in the process earn a pathway to the four Major Championships as well as the World Golf Championship events last year.

"This was my biggest win in terms of the field and the prize money so this is a big tournament for me. It got me into Majors and WGC events," said Wang.

"I'm hitting the ball well now but my putting is not very good. I'm working on it a lot so hopefully it works this week. It's getting better and I've made all four cuts in my events this year and I played well in those events, so I feel really good coming into this week."

Wang is relishing the opportunity to defend his title but he will have to overcome a host of European Tour stars if he is to do so successfully, including an in-form Chris Wood - who came close to a fourth career victory in Oman last week and also has fond memories of Qatar, claiming his very first victory in 2013 courtesy of an eagle at the final hole.
