MTV has officially cut ties with Teen Mom 2 star David Eason after he posted a series of homophobic tweets during a debate over gun control. The network denounced his comments on Wednesday before revealing that he had been fired following the incident.
"David Eason's personal comments do not reflect the views of MTV," the network said in a statement to People. "With six weeks left of production on Teen Mom 2, effective immediately, we are ending our relationship with him."
Eason, who is married to longtime show subject Jenelle Evans, was responding to user @salpollock who argued for stricter gun control and urged to "stop glorifying assault rifles."
"And just what makes you think you have the right to tell me how to be a parent? Because you think you know me? Lmao why don't you go tell the homo and transgender parents to start teaching their kids better morals? Oh I forgot that's supposed to be normal," Eason wrote in a since-deleted tweet.
His tweets sparked a call to action from fans of the show who demanded that he be fired. Evans later came to her husband's defense, denying that he had any ill will toward the LGBTQ community.
"David didn't understand how offensive people would get or how Twitter even works. Now that he realizes his voice is very strong within media/tabloids he has deactivated his account. He agrees he will keep his comments to himself from now on," she said in a statement to TMZ.
She went on to say that he "doesn't hate people from the LGBT" before adding, "We are sorry for the comments that were made."
