A monkey in Betul district destroyed the standing moong crops of a farmer. The farmer in return hanged the monkey to death as a ‘corporal punishment’.

The accused Birju Ojha, 38 was arrested on Saturday and was produced before a local court which sent him to judicial custody. Divisional forest officer Rakhi Nanda told that accused got furious as monkeys destroyed his standing crops.

A dead-monkey was found hung from a tree in Betul’s Shahpura range around two weeks ago. According to post-mortem reports, the monkey was brutally thrashed before being hanged. Excessive bleeding led to its death, said sources.

On the condition of anonymity, a forest officer told that farmer thought that by hanging a monkey, he would be able to keep the entire troop away from his farm. It was the only reason why he caught the monkey, broke its limbs and hung it on to the tree to die.
