MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) chief officer Johnson Fernandes on Monday placed before the council its annual budget proposals for the financial year 2018-19. While receipts have been pegged at Rs 74.9 crore, the expenditure is estimated to be Rs 67.5 crore, projecting a surplus budget of Rs 7.4 crore.

Some of the major proposals outlined in the budget expenditure for the first time included a disaster management fund of Rs 15 lakh and funds worth Rs 50 lakh for the upkeep of the heritage MMC building. The budget estimates will be finalized after the council deliberated over the proposals in a separate meeting to be held soon.

Controversy over the MMC’s resolution to name the Pandav Chapel Square at Aquem as Chandrakant Keni Square figured at the meeting, with chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudessai telling the council “an amicable solution” will be worked out.

Regarding the multi-level pay parking project that has been mired in the GST imbroglio, Fernandes said the contractor concerned has been asked to analyse the GST factor item-wise and submit a revised quotation within the next five-six days, after which the MMC would issue a work order worth Rs 6.5 crore.

Prabhudessai also said the commercial capital will have only one Shigmotsav programme this year.
