They plan to go on three-day fast from tomorrow

Women’s rights organisations such as Progressive Organisation of Women (POW), AIDWA and Mahila Samakhya plan to go on a three-day fast from Wednesday at the Gandhi Statue here in protest against the alleged “derogatory” comments made by film director Ram Gopal Varma. The activists have also sought his arrest.

Addressing the media here on Monday, Ms. Lakshmi of Progressive Organisation of Women said the director had insulted women by saying that pornography is a good profession as it gives pleasure. “We take exception to such derogatory remarks, as it hurts womanhood. Moreover, he does not know how to respect and speak to women,” she said.

Referring to RGV’s comment on Ms. Mani, an AIDWA activist, in a television show, Ms. Lakshmi said that the director had insulted the AIDWA activist and the government and the police have not reacted to it.

‘No action’

“Despite, we lodging a complaint with the District Collector in Visakhapatnam and the Police Commissioner and filing a complaint in a police station, no action has been initiated against the director,” she said.

The members of the women rights organisations, pointed out that the police had dispersed the complaint as non-cognizable and did not take action. “But on the other hand Telangana government has not only booked cases under IT Act against the director’s film God Sex Truth (GST), but also booked cases under IPC Sections 508 and 509. But the Vizag police is yet to react,” said Ms. Lakshmi.

To meet judge, officials

The Women rights organisations collective will not only stage a dharna and three-day fasting at the Gandhi Statue near GVMC from Wednesday, but will also meet the District Judge of Visakhapatnam and District Collector and the Commissioner of Police, on Tuesday.
