Harsh Bardhan Shringla, Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, said on Tuesday that India’s supply of electricity to Bangladesh will double in June.
India currently supplies 660MW of electricity to Dhaka on a daily basis. Of the total, 500MW is supplied through the Bhramara border in Murshidabad, West Bengal, and the rest from Tripura.
Beginning in June, supplies through the Bheramara border will increase to 1,000MW. Efforts are on to open another 50MW of supply through the North 24-Parganas district in Bengal.
Bangladesh has to purchase additional quantities from the market through short-term contacts.
Stressing on the improved cooperation outlook, Shringla said 108 agreements were signed between the two countries in the last decade of which, 60 agreements were struck in the last two years.
This also includes the first ever defence agreements.
India is offering training to thousands of judicial officers, teachers, and police personnel in Bangladesh. Also, as many as 2,000 scholarships are being offered to Bangladeshi students annually. The number of visas issued to Bangladeshis has increased from 5 lakh to 14 lakh.
