Dharwad: A corporator created panic by opening fire during
Shivaji Jayanti celebrations here on Monday.
Manjunath Kadam, who represents
Congress, arrived at Shivali Circle on Saundatti Road along with his supporters and garlanded an
idol of Shivaji. He then fired two rounds in the air with his revolver. Amid chants of ‘Jai Bhavani’ and ‘Jai Shivaji’, another leader, Basavaraj Jadhav, flashed a sword even as policemen were deployed at the site for security.
No case has been registered in this regard.
Many corporators and politicians were present at the spot. Hearing the gunshot, people ran helter-skelter.
Police interrogated Kadam and released him as he is a licensed gun holder. Later in the day, police commissioner MN Nagaraj said it has been a tradition in some communities to open fire during Shivaji Jayanti and Vijayadashami. Hence, police have not booked a case, he said.
Calls and messages to Kadam’s mobile phone number remained unanswered.
