An emergency warning notice was issued by Regional Volcanic Ash Advisory Center of Indonesia to all the airline companies after a deep volcano in Indonesia shot billowing columns of ash more than 16,000 feet into the atmosphere that crossed the stratosphere.
Mount Sinabung on the island of Sumatra erupted on Monday morning, sending hot clouds down its slopes. Previously Mt Sinabung erupted in late 2013 and displaced more than thousands of people. The alert level of Sinabung has been kept at its highest since June 2015. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said there were no fatalities or injuries. Mount Sinabung is one of three currently erupting in Indonesia, was dormant for four centuries before exploding in 2010, killing two people. There was another eruption in 2014 that killed 16 people, while seven died in a 2016 eruption.
The Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that the hot ash clouds travelled as far as 16,000 feet southwards making to give the rise of the warning level to the airlines.
The regional volcanic ash advisory center in Darwin, Australia, issued a “red notice” to airlines. Some 30,000 people have been forced to leave homes around the mountain in the past few years.
