Embattled Indianapolis City-County Council President Stephen Clay announced he would resign from the position following weeks of strife on the council and intra-party infighting.

Clay announced he would support Vop Osili as president in a special election prior to the 7 p.m. meeting. He was facing removal from the position Monday night.

"This agreement is in the best interest of moving this branch of government forward," Clay said. "This council has proven we can have robust and vigorous debates and somehow find common ground."

However, Clay will remain on the council. It is unknown whether his Democratic colleagues will allow him to come back into the caucus after ejecting him in recent weeks.

The drama between Democrats on the council burst into public view in early January when Clay worked with Republicans and a minority of Democrats to oust former President Maggie Lewis from the role.

It was a startling display of intra-party fighting that only grew more dramatic, as Clay made changes to reduce Democrats’ power on committees while elevating Republicans, fired key council staff members, was sued by his foes in the minority party.
