Former Spurs' post Splitter announces retirement
Tiago Splitter, a starter on the 2014 NBA title-winning San Antonio Spurs, announced his retirement on Monday.
The 33-year-old Splitter hasn't been on an NBA roster since the 2016-17 season. The center/forward played seven NBA campaigns.
"There's nothing better in the world than being a basketball player! The time has come, perhaps the most difficult in an athlete's career, time to say goodbye to the courts. I say goodbye with a broken heart but in the certainty of duty. Thank you all," Splitter said on Twitter.
Splitter started 153 NBA games, and 151 of them came during his five seasons with the Spurs. He posted career-best averages of 10.3 points and 6.4 rebounds in 2012-13, the season San Antonio lost to the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals.
The following season, he averaged 8.2 points and 6.2 rebounds as the Spurs downed Miami in the 2014 Finals.
Splitter also played for the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers. He averaged 7.9 points and 5.0 rebounds in 355 career appearances.
