Two people received injuries after an adult elephant charged at them in east Delhi's Laxmi Nagar on Sunday night.

The incident took place around 11 pm on Sunday. The mahout was travelling on it but he failed to control the animal for two hours.

The jumbo became so aggressive that it vandalised roadside eateries, food stalls and other objects that came in the way.

"I was at Laxmi Nagar crossing when I saw an elephant went out of control. The mahout was helpless, and was asking people to move out of the way. It was a horrific scene," said an eyewitness.

An onlooker informed police about the incident. A PCR van reached the spot but officials too were helpless and failed to regain control over it.

Police, however, managed to get the number of the owner, and informed him about the incident. The owner, along with another mahout, reached the spot and tried to calm the animal.

The owner managed to climb on the back of the elephant, while the mahout held its trunk. The latter fell down in the process and fractured his skull.

A local resident also came in the way of the elephant and received injuries. The animal eventually calmed down two hours later around 1 am, probably after it got tired.
