ALLAHABAD: The 2nd
Meghnad Saha memorial international symposium-cum-workshop on Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (MMISLIBS-II 2018) started with offering tribute to Prof Meghnad Saha at the Department of Physics of
Allahabad University, on Monday. Prof Saha was the founder of the department.
The chief guest Prof Robert Fedosejevs from the University of Alberta, Canada deliberated in detail about the use of micro LIBS from small human cell to asteroids. He highlighted the use of LIBS in the detection of water, pond water etc. and highlighted the use of LIBS as fingerprinting by knowing the concentration of sodium & silicon.
The guest of honour Prof Shiva Umapathy, recipient of Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award and from IISc Bangalore during his inaugural lecture discussed the femtosecond laser
Raman spectroscopy for the early detection of cancer activity in the human body. He also discussed the research related to septic that the features of the septic can be diagnosed at an early stage using Raman Spectroscopy. He also discussed a method based on Raman Spectroscopy through which it is possible to detect any explosive liquid in a bottle.
In the second technical session, Prof Paul Veis from Slovakia discussed the use of LIBS in the classification of meteorites. Prof SB Rai for BHU discussed the addition and division of photon in the process of upconversion and down conversion. The application of which is being used for enhancing the efficiency of solar cells.

Pradeep K Rai, senior consultant nephrologist,
Opal Hospital Varanasi presented the research based on LIBS of kidney stones samples. Depending upon the presence of elements it is possible to prescribed medicines for stopping the growth of the kidney stones. Dr Rai also discussed how to prevent for having kidney stones.
In presidential address, officiating VC of AU, Prof KS Mishra appreciated the appeal made by chief guest and guest of honour for the development of Indian Raman Spectrometer.
During poster and oral sessions, the different titles related to LIBS, Laser Ablated Plasma, Nanomaterials and other spectroscopic techniques have been presented by young researchers of the department, informed the convener of the symposium, Prof AK Rai of the department.
