Uttar Pradesh: DGP for round-the-clock availability of top cops

Synchronisation of old and modern policing, connect with lower rung officers, round-the-clock availability of senior police officers, developing innovative ideas for crime prevention and adopting late night work culture.

These were some suggestions by the UP director general of police for police officers during a marathon meeting with them at UP100 building in Lucknow on Sunday.

“Efforts are on to evolve a new work culture with focus on round-the-clock availability of senior police officers, making officers adapt to late night work culture and direct connectivity with junior officers for better coordination,” said DGP OP Singh, explaining the concept behind holding sudden late night meetings or calling up officers early in the morning.

Singh said law and order of any state could not be improved without these basic things. “The officers have to remain alert round the clock and be well informed about the ground happenings. For this, the officers need to come out on the field to know the reality,” he emphasised.

ADGs of eight zones, inspector general (IG) of police, DIGs of 18 ranges, ADG (law and order) and other senior officers were present during the meeting.

The DGP said police officers should not forget basic policing, village visits and foot patrolling and synchronise these with modern technology. He said officers should work on developing crime prevention strategies and ideas at their levels.

“We are guarding the society, so senior police officers should not confine themselves to 8-10 hours work culture. They should be ready to come out and make surprise visits to check picket duties and police stations’ performance even in odd hours,” he emphasised.

Singh said he himself was reviewing the performance of 15 districts every week.

Moreover, he asked district level officers to be regular in weekly parade and hold yoga camps to improve fitness of police personnel.

Earlier, the DGP had also started a practice of calling up and congratulating lower rung cops who showed selfless approach to serve the common man.

Recently, he held a meeting with a batch of under-trainee Indian Police Service (IPS) and Provincial Police Service (PPS) officers to make them evolve the habit of working round the clock.

He carried out surprise inspections in Kanpur and held late night meeting of officers at Lucknow police lines. The DGP also interacted with field officers to get their feedback on the challenges faced by them in the field.
