TO THE EDITOR:
I agree with Keith Crain that the electric vehicle industry “will need something that is not yet developed or commercialized” (“Don’t invest in steam engines,” Jan. 15).
One possibility is battery-swapping. Essentially, you’d buy your vehicle and rent or lease replaceable batteries the size of a few pizza boxes. You’d just pull into a service station, and either a robotic arm or a person would pull out your old battery and replace it with a fully charged one, putting the depleted battery into a grid that would recharge and back up the local power grid until reinstalled into an “empty” vehicle.
Sure, you’d need at least a national, if not an international, standard, but doesn’t this make sense in a crowded urban environment, with apartment and condo dwellers?
