Ten Hindi movies on the defence forces

New Delhi: Director Neeraj Pandey’s action thriller Aiyyary, starring Manoj Bajpayee and Sidharth Malhotra, which opened to Rs3.36 crore last Friday narrates the student-mentor relationship between two army officers. Here are 10 other Hindi movies based on the defence forces.

Shaurya (2008): The Samar Khan-directed film revolves around the court-martial of a soldier for shooting his commanding officer. Starring Rahul Bose and Kay Kay Menon, it made Rs2 crore at the box office.

1971 (2007): The Amrit Sagar-directed film tells the account of a group of soldiers taken as prisoners of war during the India-Pakistan conflict of 1971. Starring Manoj Bajpayee, Ravi Kishan, Piyush Mishra and Deepak Dobriyal in lead roles, it made Rs32 lakh at the box office.

Tango Charlie (2005): Bobby Deol goes from playing a young recruit in the Indian Border Security Force to a seasoned fighter in the Mani Shankar-directed film. Co-starring Ajay Devgn, it earned Rs7 crore in box office collections.

Lakshya (2004): In Farhan Akhtar’s war drama, Hrithik Roshan grows from an aimless young man into an army officer. The film, co-starring Preity Zinta and Amitabh Bachchan, made Rs23 crore at the box office.

LOC Kargil (2003): J.P. Dutta’s war drama was based on the India-Pakistan Kargil War and featured a host of actors, including Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan. It collected Rs17 crore at the box office.

Dhoop (2003): The Ashwini Chaudhary-directed film is based on the life of Captain Anuj Nayyar, a soldier who was killed during the Kargil conflict of 1999, and his family. Starring Om Puri, Revathi and Sanjay Suri in lead roles, it made Rs21 lakh at the box office.

Border (1997): J.P. Dutta’s war film was based on real-life incidents during the India-Pakistan war of 1971 and featured an ensemble cast of Sunny Deol, Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna and Jackie Shroff as army officers. It made Rs39 crore at the box office.

Prahaar: The Final Attack (1991): Nana Patekar directed and played the lead in one of Bollywood’s more memorable army stories, about fighting the enemy on the border and the one within. It also featured Madhuri Dixit and Dimple Kapadia in lead roles.

Vijeta (1982): The Govind Nihalani film features Kunal Kapoor as a teenager trying to find himself who later becomes a fighter pilot with the Indian Air Force. His real-life father, Shashi Kapoor, who also produced the film, plays his father in the movie too.

Haqeeqat (1964): Director Chetan Anand’s war film was based on the China-India conflict of 1962. The film, starring Balraj Sahni, Dharmendra and Priya Rajvansh, earned about Rs1 crore in box office collections.
