Vashi police have arrested a 45-year-old man, who was on the run for a week after killing his wife with a grinding stone.

Following a tip-off, the police arrested Ganesh Natha Nilakh at Kopri village in Thane. Last Sunday, Mr. Nilakh had an argument with his wife, Snehal, at their flat at Sidhivinayak CHS, Sector 29, Vashi. The police said the accused was an alcoholic and suspected his wife of infidelity.

The police said the fight broke out when Snehal returned home from her relative’s house in Sector 11. In a fit of rage, Mr. Nilakh smashed Snehal’s head with a grinding stone.

The police said Snehal also had injury marks on her face inflicted with scissors. The police said owing to constant fights between the couple, their son had been staying at his maternal uncle’s house in Vashi.

Police Inspector Kishan Gaikwad said, “After committing the murder, Nilakh boarded a train to Surat. He roamed there for a few days, and decided to return when he ran short of money. We received information that he was in Kopri village and nabbed him.”

The police said the accused worked as an estate agent, but quit his job after taking to alcohol two years ago. Snehal used to run the household by taking private tutorials at home.
