The Monster Hunter is a complex game that takes you into a world where your only goal is to slay deadly beasts
At its core Monster Hunter: Worlds is an RPG game. You arrive in a new world and are tasked with killing troublesome monsters, working your way up to the final boss monster. It may feel tedious at first, but Monster Hunter has a way of drawing you in. Before you know it you will have spent the better part of your day playing just one or two single player missions. This could be attributed to the environment - the world feels like a living, breathing entity. All the monsters feel unique and they affect the environment around them. The world itself is beautiful, and you will find plenty of vegetation and variation in the different locations to make you go wow each time.
Slaying a boss monster is not easy, as each monster requires you to learn its nuances and its tricks. You will find yourself almost obsessively stalking your next monster, watching how they behave, collecting data from footprints, mucus and dung. The game also makes stalking very easy, thanks to the Scout Flies that help you follow a target by glowing the way out for you.
The monsters are brilliantly crafted and well thought out, and seem influenced by animals and mythical monsters from Earth. Killing success also depends a lot on your equipment - every monster has an encyclopedia of knowledge behind it. Study that well and you will know exactly what equipment to use to slay even the most troublesome of creatures. This system is so well thought out that it fits like blocks, one complimenting the other harmoniously.
Monster Hunter: Worlds has loads of weapon types to choose from - 14 to be precise - each with its unique way of fighting. It is enough to make anyone go crazy, but you have to try every weapon to figure out what works for you. The story, unfortunately, isn't the most interesting part of the game - it is just there to make sure you feel slightly excited. The game provides you with a feline companion called Palicos, who is supposed to help you in the battle, heal you and collect stuff that you neglected to pick up.
Multiplayer with friends is a great experience once you get in. However, setting up a game with friends is needlessly complicated and may put you off the entire thing. If you, however, manage to get a game going, playing the game co-op can be a wonderful experience. Monster Hunter: Worlds may not be a game for everyone, but it is an easy game to get addicted to. Through it countless menus and rudimentary tutorials, the game could make it hard for first time players, but if you can power through that initial hump, it is satisfying.
