Voting has started in 59 out of 60 assembly seats in Tripura assembly on Sunday morning. A total of 292 candidates of different political parties including the Marxist Communist Party (CPI-M), Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are in the electoral fray this time. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar is also contesting elections with the intention of coming to power for the fifth time.

The security arrangements have been made to ensure free and fair elections in the state. Chief Electoral Officer Shriram Taranikanti has said that the security forces, including the election officials and the personnel of the state police force have taken all measures to make the elections fair and peaceful.
He added, “We will ensure that elections are done in an independent and fair manner. This is possible only with the cooperation of police, central forces and all stakeholders, especially the citizens, political parties and the press.”
Counting of votes will take place on March 3. The CPI (M) government has been in the state since 25 years. In this election, BJP is giving tough competition to the ruling party.
Election Commission has deployed 16,000 election personnel with 20,000 personnel of security forces in 3174 polling stations for peaceful polling. In the Assembly elections, 25.37 lakh voters in the state will decide the fate of 292 candidates from different parties.

A total of 3214 polling stations have been set up in the state. 22 thousand vehicles have been put on duty for voting system to ensure safety on the roads of National Highways, District Roads and Villages.
