Tripura will go to polls today to elect a new assembly. Voting, which will start at seven in the morning, will end at 4 PM. Polling will take place for 59 seats out of a total of 60 constituencies.
Polling for Charilam seat has been postponed till the 12th of next month following the death of a candidate.
A total of 292 candidates including 20 women are in the fray. Out of a total of 3,174 polling stations, 47 will be handled by all-women poll staff. Chief Electoral Officer Sriram Taranikanti has said that Web casting of polling will be done from almost all polling booths so that Election Commission officials could monitor the process. Director General of Police AK Shukla has said that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections.
He also said that the Indo-Bangla border has been sealed to prevent any trans-border movement. AIR correspondent reports that the main contest is likely to be between BJP and CPI-M.
