Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani was detained today in Ahmedabad on his way to a protest he had called over farmer and Dalit activist Banubhai Vankar's death.

The Vadgam MLA's car was stopped in Ahmedabad's Sarangpur area enroute the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar circle- where he had called for a bandh.

In a video going viral on Twitter, Jignesh Mevani can be seen demanding to see the police officials' buckle number and asking them the reason for stopping his car.

Mevani can be heard saying, "Show me your buckle number. How can you behave with an MLA like this?"

Reportedly, the cops snatched the car keys and broke it, while forcefully pulling Mevani out of the vehicle.

Reacting to allegations that the police misbehaved with Mevani, JK Bhatt, JCP (crime) said, "His (Jignesh Mevani) behaviour was inappropriate but police maintained cool and gave deserved respect to an elected representative."

Meanwhile, Vankar's family has refused to perform the final rites unless their demands to the government are met.

Dalit activist and farmer Banubhai Vankar along-with nine other people were detained by the police on Friday after they tried to storm into the premises of the collectorate with the intention to commit suicide.

The police released all the 10 detainees later but Vankar managed to enter the collectorate premises by jumping over the barricade and set himself on fire.

He had been protesting against the alleged delay in handing over a piece of land allotted to him under a government scheme, a police official said.

Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani had earlier in a statement said it was a "matter of shame" for the BJP government that Dalits had to resort to extreme steps to fight for their rights.
