WhatsApp's entry into the Indian digital payments space has ruffled Paytm's feathers. CNBC-TV18 spoke to Paytm’s Founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma on February 15th.
In that conversation a visibly miffed Sharma hit out at retail payment regulator National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for allowing WhatsApp Pay to rollout in India without password authentication. He also accused the NPCI of altering the rulebook to favour foreign companies.
Today the NPCI has attempted to soothe frayed nerves saying that WhatsApp Pay is still in its testing stage and the final product will adhere to the same rules set down for Indian players. NPCI says the full scale launch will only happen if the broad principles for interoperability are met.
CNBC-TV18 spoke to Bipin Preet Singh, Founder and CEO of MobiKwik and Nikhil Pahwa, Founder and Editor at Medianama.
