GREATER NOIDA: A 40-year-old police constable allegedly attempted rape on a six-year-old child when she had gone to a shop near the Kulesra police chowki where he was deployed.

This is the second incident in less than two months when a policeman has been accused of a such a crime. On January 10, a 45-year-old police constable on deputation with sales tax department had allegedly raped a 7-year old girl in presence of her younger brother after luring her with a ten rupee note in Surajpur area.

Constable Narendra Singh- a 90 batch cop- who was apparently, under the influence of alcohol held the child by hand and took her inside the chowki after which he closed the door.

However, the constable could not close the door fully and the child somehow managed to get out of the chowki.

The father of the child who works as an auto driver told TOI that around 7am on Saturday, the girl had gotten ready to leave for school when her mother sent to a nearby shop to get biscuits when Narendra spotted her and took her inside the chowki.

“As she ran back to her house, I saw two cops coming towards our area. As soon as my child left home for school, I saw Narendra holding her hand while my daughter ran back leaving his hand with a jerk. When I asked my daughter about it, she revealed her ordeal to me and what had transpired in the police chowki,” he said.

He alleged that when he confronted Narendra about the incident, he left the spot without saying anything.

The father then called 100 number and a PCR team arrived at the spot after which the locals and a group of Bajrang Dal members gathered at the police chowki around 9:30am.

Heated arguments ensued as the villagers protested against police and pressurized the Kulesra chowki incharge Harbir Singh to lodge an FIR against the accused who had left the spot soon after the incident.

There were reports that the chowki incharge had earlier asked the family members to settle the matter but the same were not confirmed by police.

As the matter reached higher officials, the constable was subsequently arrested and an FIR was lodged against him for outraging a woman’s modesty under IPC sections 376, 511 and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act.

The child was taken to the community health centre in Bhangel where a medical examination was conducted which ruled out rape.

A medical examination on the cop confirmed that he was drunk.

Villagers alleged that most policemen at the Kulesra police chowki were habitual of drinking.

“Cops are usually found in a drunk position during early mornings. While there are around 14 cops deployed here, only Narendra Singh is found here in early morning,” said Sandeep Singh, a resident of Kulesra.

SP (rural) Suniti admitted that alcohol was a problem and she has instructed all the three circle officers to visit the chowkis in the evening and strictly instruct the cops deployed to restrain from indulging in drinking.
