India, Iran ink nine agreements in different areas |

India and Iran on Saturday signed nine pacts in different areas. The fields in which agreements were inked are Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to taxes on Income, exemption from Visa requirement for holders of Diplomatic Passports, exchange of instrument of ratification of extradition treaty.
Other MoUs were signed in the areas of lease contract for Shahid Beheshti Port- Phase 1 of Chabahar, medicine and agriculture and allied sectors. The MoUs were signed after bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in New Delhi.
In addition to these agreements, four other MoUs were signed on the sidelines of the visit between trade bodies of the two countries.
In his press statement after the talks, Prime Minister Modi said, he had a fruitful discussion with Dr Rouhani on a wide range of issues of mutual interest. He said, both the sides are interested to further increase their economic development, energy cooperation and connectivity.
Mr Modi said, the Iranian President's visit will further deepen and strengthen bilateral ties. Mr Modi also said, both countries would like to see a prosperous and terror-free Afghanistan. He said, India and Iran are connected by common Sufi strain and want the region to be free of terror.
The Prime Minister also thanked Mr Rouhani for providing leadership in developing Chabahar Port which is a golden gateway to Central Asia.
In his pres statement, the Iranian President said, Chabahar Port will improve connectivity in the region. He said, Iran would like to further develop its relations with India in all spheres. He said, there is a need to combat terrorism and extremism.
The two Leaders also released a joint postage stamp depicting Deendayal Port, Kandla and Shahid Beheshti Terminal, Chabahar that reflected the enhanced prosperity through greater connectivity.
Later, briefing media, Joint Secretary (Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran) in the External Affairs Ministry, Dr Deepak Mittal said, discussions were held on how to maintain peace in the region. He said, both the leaders expressed their shared concern on terrorism. He said, the two leaders were of the view that trade and investments should be promoted. On a query, Dr Mittal said, issue of Kulbhushan Jadhav did not figure in the talks.
Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj called on the visiting dignitary and discussed ways to strengthen co-operation in energy, connectivity, IT, education, culture and people-to-people contact.
The Iranian President was accorded a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhawan Saturday morning. He also visited Rajghat to pay tributes to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. The Iranian President, who is on three-day visit to India, arrived in New Delhi last night after his stay in Hyderabad.
