Greater Fall River athletes make their marks at divisional statechampionships in Boston
Two Greater Fall River hurdlers, one high jumper and a relay team, by virtue of their finishes at their respective state divisional track and field meets at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, have qualified for the Auerbach All State Meet.
The top three finishers in an event qualify for All State, back at the Lewis Center on Feb. 24.
Case senior Kyle Koehler (season-best 8.13) and Somerset Berkley junior Kathryn Sullivan (school record 8.78) each took third place in the 55-meter hurdles, Koehler in Division 5 on Thursday and Sullivan in Division 4 on Wednesday.
Case’s Devin Proulx took third place in the high jump at 6 feet, and the Cardinals’ 4x200 relay team of Proulx, Koehler, Antonio Luna and Noah Couitt took second place in 1:35.97.
Couitt took fourth place in the 55 dash in a personal record 6.75. Other notable efforts by Case athletes included Riley Thorpe’s PR 1:30 in the 600, Austin Michael’s 10:54 in the two miles and the shot put throws of Brandon Bednarik (41-9), Isaac Tucker (40-9) and Paul Sousa (40-4).
For the Case girls, Meredith Castro broke her own school record with a 7.67 in the 55 and she long jumped 14-8. Britnelyn Keighley ran a personal record 9.47 in the hurdles. Castro, Autumn Medeiros, Keighley and Megan Borges ran a season-best 1:55 in the 4x200 while freshman Alyssa Storm ran a 13:28 two miles.
For Somerset Berkley, the 4x800 relay team of Caitlin Lourenco, Megan Salsinha, Jordan Ramos and Fiona Lyons (10:28.56) placed ninth.
Lourenco (1000, 3:19.62) and Kathleen Martin (shot put, 31-3) both placed 14th. Zach Reeve (1000, 2:47.31) placed 16th and the 4x800 team of Matt Macek, Conner Robidoux, Reeve and Aiden Quigley (8:57.46) placed 17th.
Girls’ Basketball
Bishop Stang 56, Martha’s Vineyard 49: At Martha’s Vineyard, Rylie carreau poured in 25 points to lead the Spartans to this Eastern Athletic Conference win.
Nora Markey and Caroline King both scored nine points. Stang led 26-20 at the half.
