The Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) would collaborate with the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) to set up garbage treatment plants at all the circle offices.
Aimed at turning garbage into organic manure, the move would also help the authorities solve the issue of space constraint. The present garbage dumping yard at Rampur was posing several problems to people in the surrounding villages.
Speaking to The Hindu, Mayor N. Narender said they were dumping about 240 tonnes of garbage at Rampur at present. And as it was being burnt, the smoke and stink were causing problems to the people, who have been demanding the corporation to shift the dump yard. However, owing to non-availability of space to dump garbage, the municipal corporation had no choice but to dump waste at Rampur, he added. The present dump yard, about 30 acres of land, is proving to be small to accommodate the garbage being generated by the tri-cities—Warangal, Hanamkonda and Kazipet.
Public cooperation
Mr. Narender said Warangal was accorded the smart city status and efforts were on to live up to the expectations. “I urge people to supplement the efforts of the corporation by keeping their surroundings clean and by segregating garbage into wet and dry ones,” he said.
The corporation has distributed two dust bins to each household to enable them separate wet and dry waste, but many are yet to comply with the new norm.
