- New Delhi: Spelling out the verdict in the 122-year old Cauvery water dispute case, the Supreme Court cut Tamil Nadu’s quota of water by 14.75 tmcft and increased Karnataka’s share to meet Bengaluru’s drinking water needs. Tamil Nadu will get 404.25 tmcft, which will be 14.75 tmcft less than what was allotted by the tribunal in 2007. The CJI said the 2007 tribunal award of 30 tmcft to Kerala and 7 tmcft water to Puducherry will remain unchanged. The Supreme Court said drinking water has to be kept on the highest pedestal. It said its order on Cauvery water allocation will continue for the next 15 years. Here are the latest developments from the Cauvery river water dispute case:
- 1.22 pm IST Tamil Nadu has been cheated: DMK’s MK Stalin
- 1.18 pm IST ‘Shocked’, says Kamal Hassan, on SC reducing TN’s supply of waterResponding to the Supreme Court verdict on Cauvery water dispute, actor Kamal Hassan said he was “shocked at the reduction in the supply of water” to Tamil Nadu.“I am also shocked at the reduction in the supply of water. I have to get more details about the actual judgement but I think Supreme Court firmly said that water can’t be owned by any state. That’s a consoling factor,” ANI quoted Haasan as saying.
- 1.02 pm IST AIADMK is the culprit: DMK MP Elangovan on SC verdictDMK MP TKS Elangovan has blamed the AIADMK for the Supreme Court verdict in the Cauvery water dispute where Tamil Nadu’s share has been reduced to meet Bengaluru’s drinking water needs.“The AIADMK is the culprit. They spoil everything for their political gains. The DMK took up the case in the right way but the AIADMK did not work towards it properly. The verdict has come out as a shocker as we have always demanded at least 192 TMC of water,” News18 quoted Elangovan as saying.

— ANI (@ANI) February 16, 2018 - 11.50 am IST Supreme Court increases Karnataka’s share in view of Bengaluru water needsThe Supreme Court directed the Karnataka government to release 177.25 tmcft of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from its inter-state Biligundlu dam. The judgement clarified that Karnataka will now have an enhanced share of 14.75 tmcft water per year, while Tamil Nadu will get 404.25 tmcft, which will be 14.75 tmcft less than what was allotted by the tribunal in 2007. The CJI said the 2007 tribunal award of 30 tmcft to Kerala and 7 tmcft water to Puducherry will remain unchanged. The apex court also allowed Tami Nadu to draw an additional 10 tmcft ‘groundwater’ from a total of 20 tmcft beneath the Cauvery basin. It said the increase in share of Cauvery water for Karnataka by 14.75 tmcft is because of the 10 tmcft groundwater and 4.75 tmcft drinking water requirement for Bengaluru residents. The apex court said drinking water has to be kept on the highest pedestal. It said its order on Cauvery water allocation will continue for the next 15 years. (PTI)
