TIVERTON - Amicable Congregational Church announced Worship Themes for the Season of Lent.
During this season of Lent, the worship theme will be “Meeting the Other” with each sermon series looking at how we make our ethical decisions.
Starting Sunday, Feb. 18, there will be an introduction to Dr. Jonathan Haidt’s book, “The Righteous Mind.” Haidt writes about five “moral pillars” we all use in making decisions between right and wrong.
Feb. 25, second Sunday in Lent, the “moral pillar” of Loyalty. The Rev. William Sterrett will share how his personal life history influences what role loyalty plays in his ethical decision making.
March 4, third Sunday in Lent, the “moral pillar” of Sanctity/Purity. Guest speaker Bente Sterrett, a clinical social worker and therapist will share her personal perspective on purity and sanctity with a focus on the LGBTQ community.
March 11, fourth Sunday in Lent, the “moral pillar” of Fairness. Guest speaker Maryellen Castro will offer her insights into the issue of fairness and law. Castro’s background includes experience in financial services and healthcare.
March 18, fifth Sunday in Lent, the “moral pillar” of Caring. Guest speaker Dr. Stephen Zuehlke, a cardiologist, will share his thoughts on patient “care” and medicine.
March 25, sixth Sunday in Lent, the “moral pillar” of Authority/Respect. On Palm Sunday, when Jesus rides into Jerusalem, having spoken out on many authoritative issues of the day, Amicable’s youth will present their thoughts on authority and respect.
Amicable’s sermon series during Lent will coincide with a discussion series being offered by both Amicable Congregational Church and the Tiverton Public Library. “Building Bridges: Reaching Across the Divide” is a forum to encourage conversations around ethical decision making in the face of the divisive issues we are facing as a community, country, and world.
Tuesday, Feb. 20, will kick off the series from 7 to 8:30 p.m. with a video documentary highlighting Dr. Jonathan Haidt’s book, “The Righteous Mind.”
**Tuesday, Feb. 27, will be a book discussion from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas, which recognizes and explores racial tensions in our country. This is also the Read Across Rhode Island book.
**Tuesday, March 6, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Baha Sadr, Director of Refugee Resettlement from Dorcas International Institute of RI, will help us explore, through a brief documentary, the issues facing refugees and immigrants in Rhode Island.
**Tuesday, March 20, 7 to 9 p.m. A panel discussion led by different faith leaders who will examine their understanding of the ethical elements of loyalty.
**For those who missed the initial video documentary presentation of Jonathan Haidt’s work, the video will be shown again on these dates at 6:30 p.m.
All events will be held at the Tiverton Public Library at 34 Roosevelt Ave.
