Fashion designer Prarthnna says that her biggest source of inspiration is the sensuality and classiness of the contemporary woman. Her brand Kovet recently showcased her Spring/ Summer collection ‘Unabridged’ at New York Fashion Week with Society Fashion Week. The New York Fashion Week took place from February 8 to 16.
At the Fashion Week, Prarthnna launched four collections. Her Resort wear, inspired by the sun, sand and pearl, showcased asymmetrical silhouettes. In shades of sand, the apparels are embellished with sequins, pearls and stones. Inspired by fuchsia flower, the Brunch wear collection can be seen in shades of pink with dramatic silhouettes. The Red Carpet collection is in black with a touch of gold sequins and the Power Dressing collection is in pristine white defining ambition, purity, sincerity and power. She says that her collections are a reflection of her inner self. “These collections are for a woman who knows her capability of doing big things in life,” she shares. Excerpts from an interview:
How was your experience of showcasing your collection at New York Fashion Week?
It was a wonderful and spectacular experience. I enjoyed every bit from behind the scenes to the runway. There was so much to learn and explore. The best part is that Kovet had been appreciated for its collection.
What was the inspiration behind designing ‘Unabridged’?
I strongly believe in the multiple roles that women of today adapt to. My biggest source of inspiration is the blend of sensuality and classiness of today’s women.
Will it be wrong to say that you have infused a lot of global designs?
Today, the world is growing globally through the internet. Each and every design of mine has been created to be accepted globally.
Having showcased your collection at New York Fashion Week and having interacted with people internationally, where do you think India stands in the global fashion map?
India is creating a beautiful platform at an international level. Our country has always been rich in its textiles and craftsmanship. We have unique techniques of creating embellishments through different handmade techniques which makes our collection unique and rich in crafts. Therefore each piece becomes a masterpiece.
What are some of the common mistakes that women make while following fashion?
I feel a woman should understand her needs while dressing up. She shouldn’t force herself to wear something that she isn’t confident about. Comfort with style is something I advise every woman to take up while following fashion.
You say, ‘Dressing should be defined by body shape, personal colours and variation’. Can you elaborate on that?
Yes, I do believe in that sense of dressing. When you choose a dress according to your body shape, and colour, not only it helps you look gorgeous outside but also inside. It makes you confident, which is eventually the biggest style.
What are some of the fashion trends of spring/ summer 2018?
This season, we are going to see lots of soft pastel colours, asymmetrical silhouettes, fringes, different techniques in stitching, handmade flowers created through fabrics. Also, power dressing is going to be the biggest fashion this year.
