A day after a woman BJP leader slapped a constable in a police post in cantonment area of Bareilly, an FIR was registered against her on Wednesday.

“The FIR under Section 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public function and other sections) is registered against one Jyoti Mishra in Cantt Police station,” confirmed Rohit Singh Sajwan, SP (city), Bareilly.

Jyoti Mishra is an office-bearer in a local BJP unit. She reportedly went to the police post on Tuesday around 9pm to ensure release of a man detained by the cops. She was accompanied by a group of people who were said to be family members of the detainee.

There was reportedly an argument between the group and the police team. A CCTV recording of the incident showed Mishra slapping a constable, Vipin Chauhan. People accompanying Mishra later manhandled the constable.

Chauhan declined to comment on the issue, saying, “I have informed my seniors regarding the matter. It is up to them to take action regarding it.” Jyoti Mishra could not be reached for a comment.

The local BJP unit extended their support for Mishra. “Yeh kriya ki pratikriya hai (It is a reaction of an action). The police administration is working against BJP and local population. Police are inciting BJP workers to take a tough stand against them,” said Umesh Katheria, district president of BJP, maintaining that “BJP workers can never attack a police officer.”

Katheria claimed that he sent a report regarding the matter to the party’s high command and sought action against the constable.
