Daman municipal councillor held for issuing threats, extortion

Surat: Police arrested two persons, including an independent municipal councillor of Daman municipality from Nani Daman, on Wednesday for allegedly issuing threats to extort money from a company. The accused had allegedly entered a private company and issued threats while abusing the employees.

Shailesh alias Shilu Patel, independent councillor, and Narottam Patel were arrested by Nani Daman police station following the complaint by an employee of an industrial unit in Somnath locality of Daman Sharad Mishra. The accused were booked under various Sections of Indian Penal Code, including 387 (putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt in order to commit extortion), 451 (trespassing in order to commit offence), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and others.


In his complaint Mishra alleged that the accused had forcibly entered in factory unit and started abusing the employees. Patel also threatened the employees with intention to extort money. Police are yet to find out exactly how much money the accused was trying to extort.
