On Monday, the minister had called for appointing all the 37 qualified candidates of Punjab Service Commission exam who were selected for the post of lecturer. While giving appointments to the candidates he reached at a point where two lecturers, one from Nabha and another from Patiala wanted the same posting. Both the lecturers wanted to be posted to a government polytechnic institute at Patiala.
To resolve the issue someone from the minister's team suggested to flip the coin, and Charanjit Singh Channi agreed to it. Channi was caught on camera tossing the coin, while others around him giggled.
When confronted Channi said that he didn't see this as doing something wrong because all the other candidates were given choice postings, but two lecturers who had equal merit wanted the same centre, so left with no other option he flipped the coin so that there is no partiality.
