Bengal Police choose Valentine’s Day for Gandhigiri, send flowers, gifts to two men who slammed them on FB
North Dinajpur police chief Shyam Singh wrote a letter to them seeking suggestions for improvement.

If you slam the police in writing chances are that you will be hauled up badly. To prove the popular perception wrong, police in West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district chose February 14 to send flowers and gifts to the homes of two men inviting suggestions on how to rectify their mistakes.
On February 9, Shankar Roy, a school teacher and Debopriya Chakraborty, a businessman, posted objectionable comments on Facebook venting their anger against the police.
Their ire followed the death of a class 10 student, Pratik Chattopadhyay, in a road accident in front of his school at Raiganj’s Siliguri crossing.

Local people and police clashed as the men in uniform were accused of dereliction of duty.
In their posts, Roy and Chakraborty slammed the police and advocated stern action against those who were on duty that day.
To everybody’s surprise in the district headquarters Raiganj, a team of police led by a brass band on Wednesday marched to the residences of Roy and Chakraborty. Officers carrying flower bouquets, printouts of the Facebook posts and letters from the district police superintendent knocked on their doors.

Roy was not at home. His father Ragunath, a retired policeman, received the gifts from the police team.
“We went to the two families with the gifts and message of love as per the instruction of district police super, Shyam Singh,” said Sandip Chakraborty, a sub inspector of Raiganj police station.
“It was a pleasant surprise. After the student died in road accident I was quite disturbed and wrote against the police,” said Debopriya Chakraborty.
“I don’t subscribe to what my son wrote about the police,” said Raghunath Roy.
“I wish to get suggestions from you in case police make any mistake,” wrote the district police chief in his letter.
He also mentioned that he was sorry for any mistake committed by police in the past and urged the men to help make a constructive society.
