Sports Reporter JAMMU: Mountaineering Association of J&K (MAJK) shall host the two-day First National Sport Climbing Championship for Visually Challenged climbers from March 27 at Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Bantalab, here. This was confirmed by the Chairman, Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), North Zone Committee, S. Bhattacharjee who was here to inspect the climbing infrastructure and other necessary allied facilities available at Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Jammu for the conduct of national competition. “He also promised to provide some technical equipment and technical officials from the IMF North Zone Committee for the efficient and smooth conduct of the maiden National Championship,” informed General Secretary of the Association, Ram Khajuria. While exhorting the climbers to prepare for the forthcoming Asian Games in Indonesia this year and Tokyo Olympics in 2020, Bhattacharjee appreciated the efforts of the Association to spot the talent at the grass root level by regularly organising one day coaching cum competitions for local schools. He also congratulated MAJK for the excellent performance of the J&K climbers in the National Championship wherein the J&K team bagged eight medals including two gold and two silver. Meanwhile, Ram Khajuria, General Secretary of MAJK expressed his gratitude to S. Bhattacharjee for the allotment of the National Championship for Visually Challenged climbers to J&K and promised to make it a memorable event. He also thanked the J&K State Sports Council for the sponsorship of the first ever National Competition for Visually Challenged climbers. The IMF Chairman further disclosed that two ace climbers of the State Shivani Charak and Mrityunjay Sharma are likely to be invited by Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi for trials for selection of the Indian team for the forthcoming Asian Games to be held in Indonesia in August. He advised the association to prepare them fully for the selection trials by deputing them to different climbing walls in the country for coaching and practice so as to facilitate their selection in the Indian team.
